Niagara University was founded in November of 1856 when the six students from the College and Seminary of Our Lady of Angels moved from the home of the bishop of Buffalo to a vacant location in the city of Buffalo. The college continued to prosper, and in April of 1863, the New York State Legislature granted a charter that empowered the College and Seminary of Our Lady of Angels to grant degrees. New York Governor Grover Cleveland approved the college's name change to Niagara University in November of 1883.

Today, the University continues to be sponsored by the Vincentians, and stresses the mission of St. Vincent, regarded by the Catholic Church as the universal patron of charitable deeds. Niagara has an enrollment of more than 3,000 students and strives to prepare its students for positions of responsibility by providing internship and volunteer opportunities that serve their community. The University’s close proximity to both Buffalo and Toronto provides ample opportunity for students to gain an education outside of the traditional classroom experience.

Niagara University competes at the NCAA Division I level as members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The men’s and women’s ice hockey teams compete as members of College Hockey America. The University sponsors 17 varsity sports.
