The Iowa State Normal School was founded in 1876 after the Iowa General Assembly approved funds for a teacher preparation school. The school became known as the Iowa State Teachers College in 1909. As the enrollment and curriculum grew, the college changed names again, becoming the State College of Iowa in 1961. The institution officially became the University of Northern Iowa in 1967.

Today, the University of Northern Iowa offers more than 110 undergraduate majors along with advanced degree studies to more than 13,000 students. Considered a long-time leader in the field of education, UNI has chartered several initiatives to improve the quality of education both in the United States and abroad. The College of Education has received millions of dollars in federal grants to assist in education reform and enhancement in countries such as Slovakia, Bulgaria, China and Chile. The University of Northern Iowa also has a national reputation for excellence in the field of accounting, receiving numerous awards for top scores among first-time CPA candidates.

UNI competes at the NCAA Division I level as members of the Missouri Valley Conference. Panther football competes at the Division I-AA level in the Gateway Conference. UNI sponsors 16 men’s and women’s varsity sports.
